If you’re visiting Crested Butte in the warmer months of the year, you might be interested in spending time enjoying the great outdoors. Hiking is one of the best ways to stay active, explore the stunning surroundings, and spend time with your loved ones all at once!

Regardless of your hiking experience, you’re sure to enjoy one of the best hikes in Crested Butte on our list.

Lost Lake Slough

Lost Lake Slough is ideal if you’re new to hiking or have younger hikers in your group. This hike is just a few minutes away from Crested Butte, which allows you to get away from the significant crowds and enjoy the trail nearly all to yourself. You’ll find this trail located at Lost Lake Campground.

Your hike begins at the Campground at an elevation of 9,600 feet. As you make your way along the 2.8-mile trail, you’ll witness some of the most impressive mountain views, waterfalls, lakes (the three lakes here inspired the nickname Three Lakes Loop), and Colorado’s forests. After you’re done with your hike, you can even come back down to the water to paddle or cool off after your journey.

To get to the Lost Lake Campground, you’ll need to head about 16 miles west of Crested Butte, traveling along County Road 12. You’ll then turn left at the intersection with Forest Service Road #706. After that, follow the road for two more miles, and at the end, you’ll find Lost Lake Campground and Slough. You can find free parking before the entrance, or you can park at the lake for $6.

Horse Ranch Park

If you’re looking for great views of the mountains and the Kebler Pass, then you should plan a hike at Horse Ranch Park. This trail is rated as moderate difficulty, so those with young kids should likely avoid this option. Overall, you’ll cover six miles of trail and gain approximately 1,100 feet of elevation.

Many hikers in the area say that if you’re planning a trip to Crested Butte in the fall, Horse Ranch Park is a can’t-miss attraction. In late September and early October, the foliage transforms into breathtaking colors you must see to believe. However, even if you’re not visiting in the fall, you’ll still be taken aback by the stunning views.

To get here from our Crested Butte vacation rentals, you’ll want to head west on Elk Avenue toward 1st Street. Turn left at the first cross street onto 1st Street, then turn right onto Whiterock Avenue. Continue onto County Road 12 and follow it for 11.5 miles. Finally, turn right, and you’ll find Horse Ranch Park on the right.

Red Lady via Scarp Ridge

Looking for a serious challenge? Check out Red Lady via Scarp Ridge. This moderate to strenuous hike covers eight miles and gives you an elevation gain of nearly 3,000 feet. This hike should only be attempted by those already quite experienced in the sport.

This trail is Scarp Ridge’s longest route, but you’ll understand why it’s still so popular once you get there. You can take advantage of unbelievable 360-degree views from the peak, but on the rest of the journey, you’ll be surrounded by wildflowers and picturesque views of the ridge. Bring your camera equipment to get some shots you won’t experience anywhere else!

Starting in Crested Butte, head west on Elk Avenue toward 1st Street. Turn left at the first cross street onto 1st Street, then turn right onto Whiterock Avenue. Continue onto County Road 12 for 6.3 miles, then turn right onto County Road 826. Make a slight left, then after 0.2 miles, make another slight left onto County Road 12E. Continue straight onto County Road 826, then turn right after 2.1 miles. Make another right turn after 0.3 miles. One more mile, and you’ve reached Scarp Ridge!
